Exhibition Artwork: Coral Field, 16 × 16 in., acrylic and sand on canvas, 2022

Through the visual language of geometric minimalism, Hanger distills elements from her routine practice of watching the sun rise from the Blue Ridge Mountains and set behind the Appalachian Mountains near her home and studio. As she sits and observes the landscape around her, her eye wanders across directional patterns, nature’s organic movements, and the changing light. Hanger abstractly mimics the dynamic and cyclical beauty of the natural world, channeling a similar meditative viewing experience through her paintings.

“In this group of works I am creating simple compositions that, like a beautiful landscape, transport the viewer to a mental space conducive to silence and reflection and/or to be reminded of the joy and mystery of being alive.” - Hanger

Following the principles of the Minimalist movement, Hanger focuses on extracting only the most essential elements from each landscape, and she applies a careful and disciplined approach to her image construction. Her striking and evocative colors meet simple configurations of shapes and a variation of surface textures to include sand, glossy and matte finishes. Hanger creates a sense of order combining these elements with carefully layered, tight gestures. Her commitment to each form field extends beyond the painting’s surface to wrap around its edges, providing an all-encompassing experience similar to being in nature.

“Painting slowly and with intention satisfies my hunger for a slower, gentler world.” - Hanger

Wanderings presents Hanger’s pragmatic and collage-like approach to painting, highlighting the importance of process and color theory in physical execution, while concurrently igniting the ephemeral moments and sentiment that being one with nature provides.

About the Artist:

Anne Hanger (b. 1951, Washington DC) grew up in Fairfax, Virginia and was educated at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. As Anne Markle, she taught at the University of New Orleans and Auburn University where she worked her way up to full professor before making the decision to abandon full-time academia to devote more time to painting. In 2002 she and her husband, Bob Craycroft, moved to Staunton, Virginia.

Hanger’s work has been exhibited at the Contemporary Art Center in New Orleans, Louisiana; the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art in Winston-Salem, North Carolina; The Mississippi Museum of Art in Jackson, Mississippi; Auburn University; Sweet Briar College; and in many national and regional juried group art exhibitions. Her work is in the collections of Microsoft, Avec on H Street and The Silva in Washington, DC, Auburn University in Alabama, Louisville Bank and Trust in Georgia, Augusta Health Medical Center and Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Virginia, and the Cottonlandia Museum in Mississippi.

Artist Statement:

Years ago, when I sometimes felt overwhelmed by the world I found it comforting to cut out small rectangles of color, arranging and rearranging them until I began to see a balanced composition. Exploring juxtapositions and how one color or shape affected another as I moved them around served as a reminder that the world is full of possibilities. The more varied in size, shape and texture the rectangles were, the more satisfying it was to achieve a pleasing result. My current painting practice relies on this method but working with painted rectangles on stretched canvases instead of small collages on paper. Much of this work is primarily geometric which we tend to associate with the man-made world, but if you look carefully, you’ll see simple references to mountains and sunrise or sunset forms.

I share a passion for color with the artists of the Washington Color School, but unlike the Washington colorists who often sought a monumental quality by working on very large canvases, I try to create monumentality in small scale works. A desire for greater intimacy between my work and the viewer has guided that choice.
